Why McKinley Elementary School?

The MJ Way

McKinley Elementary School, built in 1968, serves more than 600+ children in grades 4K-6 with several additional programs including Early Childhood, English Learners, Newcomers, and Special Education.

We have a long-standing tradition of being service-oriented and we qualify as a Title I school, and with this additional support, we focus on students reading at grade level, closing gaps and making targeted growth annually.

McKinley Elementary School offers exciting educational programs that provide our children with "A Place to Grow." Programs for students with unique learning and emotional needs are provided in addition to a variety of special programs such as Civil War Encampment, Battle of the Books, band, orchestra, musical and a talent show. Children learn leadership skills through Service Club, Peer Mediation and Safety Patrol.

The community is always welcome in our school! We enjoy a strong parent and community support, with rich and diverse cultural backgrounds that enhance learning.

Innovative

McKinley Elementary block scheduling allows time for students to receive additional support for their educational needs; we call it (WIN) or What I Need. This schedule provides grade level teachers time for collaboration to closely monitor student progress and to plan lessons for student success.

Assessment Wall

Grade level teachers, the building principals, reading interventionist/coaches, and student services personnel all collaborate about the effectiveness of interventions and enrichment of all students using an electronic assessment/data wall. All staff members remain focused on individual student success all the time.

Building Character

McKinley staff members strive to meet the needs of all learners by addressing their individual academic, social, and emotional needs. Our ultimate goal is to prepare them for the 21st Century world they will eventually enter.

McKinley staff teaches character education classes based on behavioral data to proactively ensure a safe, respectful and responsible school climate. We were one of the first buildings in the district to pilot PBIS, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, a framework for our character education.

We are proud to announce that we received the School of Distinction Award multiple years for our participation and fidelity of implementing this program.

A School with HeartMJ Way

We are very fortunate to have a very strong PTA and community support. Through their efforts, over $10,000 was donated in the 2013-14 school year to our school to add more technology to each of our classrooms.

They continue to support our efforts in our goal to install Smartboard in our remaining classrooms, as well as other initiatives to support teaching and learning here at McKinley.
